The painted portion measures approximately 9" by 6", the entire piece measures approximately 14" by 11.25". There is a piece of paper taped to the back of the frame with some of the painting's provenance in writing. The painting itself is in good condition, with a few spots of small scuffs but no major damage. The frame and glass are new.  Glass is Museum Quality. Please see photos for details.

Transcript of text on the back of the frame:

"These two pastels are of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 1878. Mother bought them in the Observatory shown in the picture in 1879. Gift of Beatrice A. Yale. December 1954."

I assume this painting was originally one of a pair; I do not have the other.
